President's Corner - Feb 2006

All members renewing their Zia membership for 2006 will be required to complete an open book test on the contents of the Member Guidebook.  The Member Guidebook documents the Policies and Procedures governing the use of the Zia range and it is important that all members are familiar with and comply with range policies and procedures.  A shooting range such as Zia, must constantly be watchful of the anti-gun community, urban development and maintaining a safe shooting environment.  Today the threat to Zia’s future from anti-gunners and urban development, while ever present, are not eminent but an accident on the range is an ever present threat.

Our newest members have taken this test as recently as to months ago.  The majority of Zia members have been required to take the orientation class prior to receiving their membership and we have some members whose membership predates the orientation class.    A refresher review of the range policies and procedures will do no harm and surely everyone will learn or remember something unknown or forgotten.  The Member Guidebook is printed in this newsletter and can be downloaded from the internet.  The open book test is printed on the back of the renewal application and must be completed before your application will be processed.  Your cooperation is appreciated.

Zia continues to have a few members who insist on bringing inappropriate and/or dangerous items to the range to use as targets.  The Members Guidebook is very specific on what an appropriate target is and where and how targets are to be used to ensure maximum safety.  It should also be the practice of all members to leave berms clean and ready for the next shooter.  The Zia Board has the right to review the membership of any member not following range rules or acting in an unsafe manner.  For the safety of all members it is important that observed violation of range rules or safety procedures be reported to the Zia Board.

Everyone is aware that lack of moisture has created a very high fire danger for our range and all surrounding areas.  From the east range is easy to see how close the fire on Kirtland Base last year came to Zia.  All members are encouraged to act accordingly and take the necessary precautions to minimize the possibility of a fire originating on our range.

Safety is not just the  Number One Issue, It is THE  MORAL ISSUE!
