Presidents Corner – June 2005

Zia Rifle and Pistol Club membership for 2005 now exceeds 800 members.  Approximately 15% of the memberships are new members and a number of past members have rejoined Zia.  An estimated 150 to 200 members participate in organized shooting events monthly.  Organized shooting events provide an efficient use of range facilities allowing 10 to 30 shooters to use one firing line or berm at a time.  Organized shooting events also provide valuable family and social time, an opportunity to develop and improve shooting skills, and for many members the enjoyment of friendly competition.  All members are encouraged to investigate the shooting events offered and participate.  All club activities are eager to attract new participants and will make your introduction to the group and activity a comfortable experience.  You may want to observe a match first before you give it a try but be assured if you do not bring a gun you will leave the match wishing you had.    There is always a need for new people with shooting experience to become involved with the various shooting disciplines.    If you are interested in helping with a Zia shooting program contact the appropriate committee chairman or any Zia officer.

Zia also has an active training program.  If you or someone you know is interested in basic firearm safety, home protection, concealed carry, NRA instructor certification, etc. contact the Training Coordinator, Paul Gallagher, Personal Protection chairman Tom Tomasi or Bob Nagel for youth programs.  Membership in Zia is not required to participate in most classes (concealed carry is an exception) and the Zia Board of Directors is sponsoring efforts to ensure that the cost of a course does not prevent a person from getting needed firearms training.

You may know of several people living alone who might benefit from firearm training.  You may have a neighbor who has a loaded gun that has not been fired for 25 years.  Your child may be involved in a youth group that firearms training would be appropriate for.  Are you part of a social or Church group that would enjoy participating in a basic shooting course?  Do you have coworkers or employees who would benefit from a basic training course?  Do you know mothers who would like firearms familiarity training so they are prepared if they encounter a child with a firearm?  Firearm ownership is not required for participation in most classes and remember, membership in Zia is not required for most courses.

Safety is not just the  Number One Issue, It is THE  MORAL ISSUE!
