President's Corner Zia will be able to stay at the current range for many years to come. The New Mexico State Land Office has confirmed that the development of Mesa Del Sol will not impact the Zia Rifle and Pistol Club. Forest City, the developer for mesa Del Sol, has revised the Mesa Del Sol master plan and all proposed development extends south of the Albuquerque International Race Track (drag strip) and west to the I-25 corridor. The two sections of land directly south of the Zia range are not included in development plans at this time. The revised master plan, while retaining the economic, environmental and life style goals of the original Mesa Del Sol concept, concentrates the development closer to I-25 which will reduce infrastructure costs such as water lines, sewer lines and roads. The revised plan creates a substantial buffer between the Mesa Del Sol development and the adjacent government facilities and current aircraft operations will not have to be rerouted. The land leased by Zia is outside the boundaries of Mesa Del Sol and only the parties to the Zia range lease will remain the State Land Office and the Zia Rifle and Pistol Club. The Zia Rifle and Pistol Club exercises more control over its future today than it has in several years. The most important player in our future, as it always has been, is the State Land Office, specifically the person elected Commissioner of Pubic Lands. The current Commissioner of Pubic Lands, Pat Lyons, supports Zia and shooters statewide. Commissioner Lyons has committed to a five year extension of our current lease if he is elected to a second term. It is imperative that ALL future candidates for Commissioner of Pubic Lands and the Mayor of Albuquerque be committed to support the Zia Rifle and Pistol Club. Zia's membership has broad and deep roots in Albuquerque and it is certain that any candidate for office will now a Zia member or seek the support of a Zia member. It is important that every member speak i support of Zia when the opportunity presents itself. Zia must also be a good neighbor and our membership must act responsibly. It is important that we maintain our good working relationship with the City Police Tactical Range and the Albuquerque Open Spaces Division. Every time you unlock the gate to the Zia range remember one careless act or irresponsible decision can generate negative public attention and undo all the good will and support we are currently enjoying. We all know there are few certainties in life. The Zia lease has, always has had and always will have a 30 cancellation notice. It is reasonable to assume a bright future for Zia.
