President's Corner A safety reminder this month: The Zia Range is a COLD range. All firearms are to be unloaded when transported on the Zia range. Loaded firearms are only allowed on the designated firing lines for the various ranges and in the action pistol berms. The COLD range policy is necessary to reduce the potential for an accidental discharge. Part of the joy of gun ownership is sharing our enthusiasm for the shooting sports with other like minded persons. A new firearm or modification to an old one is something we naturally want to share with fellow shooters. Firearm inspections should take place at the firing line not at your automobile. Move to a location where proper muzzle direction is defined by an impact berm. Anytime a firearm is handled the potential for an accidental discharge is present. Unloading and loading a firearm at your automobile not only violates the COLD range policy but is a dangerous practice. A new safety area is planned for the Action Pistol Berms. Participants in Action Pistol and IPSC matches will be required to holster and bag the firearms they are competing with in the safety area. All firearms to be used in competition should arrive at the range in a gun rug/case, be removed from the gun rug/case only when holstered and leave the range in the gun rug/case. Rifle and Three Gun competitors will continue to case and uncase their firearms on the designated firing lines. Shooters competing in Cowboy matches will comply with accepted safety standards associated with Cowboy shooting. The muzzle of all uncased guns, loaded or not, must be pointed down range at an impact berm at all times. In the event of an accidental discharge safe gun handling will help ensure the projectile goes down range minimizing the risk of personal injury or damage to property. Remove firearms from vehicles in their case, uncase the firearm on the firing line with the muzzle pointed down range (remember only handle your firearm if the range is HOT), and recase your firearm with the muzzle pointing down range before placing the cased firearm back in your vehicle. If you are firing a handgun in a pistol berm, wear a holster and only unholster the handgun when facing down range. Maintain the 180 rule at all times, no one wants to be the cause or the victim of an accidental shooting. |
Safety is not just the Number One Issue, It is THE MORAL ISSUE! |
