ZIA RIFLE AND PISTOL CLUB’S NEW MEXICO CCW TRAINING PROGRAMThe following are the requirements for taking the course. First, you need to be a current member of Zia to take the class. Second, this course requires a thorough knowledge of handgun safety and a certain amount of skill in shooting a large caliber handgun. Therefore only persons with basic handgun skills as demonstrated by possessing one of the following will be admitted to this course: 1) A valid CCW License from another state. 2) Certificate of completion of an NRA Basic Pistol or Personal Protection Course within the last 5 years. 3) Law Enforcement Officer, active or retired. 4) Active Duty or Reserve Military with M-9 qualification within the past year. 5) Active participant in any Zia shooting programs involving the use of a handgun. Persons not meeting our prerequisites but who claim to be experienced pistol shooters will be evaluated by one of our instructors. If they meet our safety requirements they will be admitted to the course. If you are not an experienced pistol shooter and wish to take the class should enroll in one of our upcoming Personal Protection and First Step courses. Persons taking the class will furnish their own firearm and ammunition (at least 150 rounds), holster, belt, eye & ear protection. For safety reasons only Hip Holsters will be used on the range. The firing portion of the course will include exercises requiring a draw from concealment and presentation of the gun to the target. Those wishing to take this course should invest in a good quality strong side belt holster and practice the presentation (draw) prior to the course. Those who carry a gun for personal protection should read Massad Ayoob’s “In the Gravest Extreme” ($12) and the “Gunsite Defensive Pistol Training Handbook” ($20). Both are available from the ProShop at www.gunsite.com Carrying a handgun for personal protection involves a high degree of responsibility. We will provide the information that is required by the state along with some additional information we feel is necessary. It is up to you, the gun owner, to know all you can about the carrying and use of a handgun for self-defense. |
