The Zia Shotgun Activity is broken down into two distinct areas; Casual Shooting and Formal Activity Shoots which are held on two separate days of each month.

Casual shooting is available to Zia members anytime the shotgun range is not being used for formal activity shoots or closed for maintenance or some other reason. Zia has several Lincoln manual clay traps in place and available on the shotgun range. A patterning board located down range on the shotgun range is available for patterning a shotgun. Members, their guests and families are welcome to use the facilities on a first come, first serve basis. The range is designed so that more than one group can use the range simultaneously. In this case, the single range officer rule applies to the entire shotgun range for hot/cold control. The club does not sell expendables such as clay birds but they can be purchased locally for casual use.

FORMAL ACTIVITY SHOOTS

Zia offers 3 types of shotgun shooting activities at the shotgun range; Sporting Clay and 5 Stand and/or Wobble Trap. These shoots are open to all Zia members and their guests. The fees are nominal and are held on the following days of the month:

  • 4th Sunday of the month – Wobble Trap and 5 Stand: These activities are squadded at sign in and shot simultaneously at different locations on the Shotgun Range
  • 3rd Sunday of the month – Sporting Clays

These shoots are included on the Zia calendar which can be found in the monthly newsletter and on the Club web site. The signup times and shoot start times vary with daylight savings time and are found on the calendars. Brief descriptions of these activities follow.

SPORTING CLAYS

Sporting Clays and 5 Stand are very similar in which a variety of target presentations are thrown for each of the shooting stations. In Sporting Clays, shooting squads are formed with each squad member getting to shoot a predetermined number at shots from each station. At each station a menu card will explain the sequence of targets for that station.

No two Sporting Clays courses are exactly alike. Currently Zia offers a Sporting Clay shotgun activity in which a shooter can choose to shoot 100 targets for $12 or 50 targets for $6. Shooters 21 years old or younger shoot for free with ammo provided (20ga or 12ga) (100 rounds/day limit). Zia is currently working on plans to expand the Sporting Clays to a 10 station course with further details to come.

To implement a smoother sign up for Sporting Clays, an email sign up system is in place. Sporting clay shooters are encouraged to use this email process. “Sign up” can be for a squad of up to 7 (max) shooters or as individuals. Please send your “sign up” prior to the day before the shoot to ensure your squad will be processed for that shoot. The email address for this procedure is: ziasignup@gmail.com. Simply identify yourself and list your shooters in the desired sequence. Your squad will be pre-assigned and fees will be collected at the shoot.

5 STAND

In 5 Stand there are five stations, called “stands” which use 6 to 8 strategically placed electric clay traps throwing various target presentations. Up to 5 shooters shoot in turn at various combinations of clay birds. Each stand has a menu card that lets the shooter know the sequence of clay birds they will be shooting at from each stand. The Zia 5 Stand traps are electric and remotely controlled by a wireless electronic release system. Five Stand is a great way to get a Sporting Clays-like experience in a small amount of space, with very little walking. A round of 5 Stand is 25 targets for $3 with 21 years old or younger shoot for free with ammo provided (20ga or 12ga)(50 rounds/day limit).

WOBBLE TRAP

Trapshooting is one of the three major disciplines of competitive clay pigeon shooting (trap, skeet and sporting clays) and is shot throughout the world. There are variations to trap shooting with Zia offering a wobble trap setup. In Wobble Trap, up to 5 shooters, shoot in turn at a trap set behind an enclosure (trap house) that is 16 yards in front of the shooters. The trap oscillates 45 degrees from side to side as well as up and down. A “round” of Wobble Trap is 25 targets for $3 and children/relatives of Zia members 21 years old or younger shoot for free with ammo provided (20ga or 12ga)(50 rounds/day limit).

RULES FOR THE ZIA SHOTGUN RANGE

  1. Do not use any firearm other than a shotgun on the shotgun range.
  2. No shot/projectile size larger than 7-1/2 is permitted.
  3. Clean up the range after shooting. Pick up all empty shells, cardboard cases, etc.
  4. Eye and ear protection is required.
  5. During casual shooting with more than one group shooting, establish appropriate range communication/range control between shooting groups.
  6. Steel shot is not to be fired at the patterning board and a minimum distance to fire at the patterning board is 20 yards.
  7. Fire in the direction of west to south between the white marking posts.
